Dr. Fu-Tong Liu is currently Vice President of Academia Sinica, Taiwan. He received his BS degree in Chemistry from National Taiwan University and PhD degree in Chemistry from University of Chicago. He performed postdoctoral work first in organic chemistry and subequently in immunology. Then he joined the faculty at the Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). He attended the two-year PhD to MD program at University of Miami and then received dermatology residency training at University of California-San Diego, while maintaining his research program at TSRI. He served as Head of the Allergy Research Section at TSRI and directed the Division of Allergy at La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology. In 2001, he was appointed as Professor (and then Distinguished Professor) and Chair of Dermatology, University of California-Davis. In 2010, he returned to Taiwan and became Distinguished Research Fellow and Director at Institute of Biomedical Sciences, Academia Sinica. He was appointed as Vice President of Academia Sinica in 2016. He is currently President of Chinese Society of Immunology, Taiwan.
Dr. Liu contributed to the identification of the family of animal lectins galectins. His current research is focused on the investigation of the functions of this family in inflammation, innate immunity, cancer, and adiposity. Dr. Liu has published close to 360 original scientific papers and review articles. His papers have been cited over 29,000 times and his h-index is 92 (Google Scholar). He was an associate editor of Journal of Clinical Investigation and is currently on the editorial board of a number of journals, including Glycobiology and Experimental Dermatology, and is on the reviewer board of Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology. He is an elected member of Association of American Physicians, Fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), Academician of Academia Sinica, and Fellow of National Academy of Inventors. He was First Laureate of the 2015 Khwarizmi International Award.
